Yellamma Bonalu – A Vibrant Celebration of Tradition and Devotion in Telangana
Hi everyone!
I’m Aadya, and I am in the 6th grade. I want to share with you one of the most beautiful and special festivals from my home state, Telangana — it’s called Yellamma Bonalu.
This is not just any festival. It’s full of colors, happiness, traditions, and most of all, love for the Goddess Yellamma. Every year, during the month of Ashada (that’s July–August), people in Telangana come together to celebrate this amazing event.
🎉 What Is Yellamma Bonalu?
“Bonalu” means offerings in Telugu (the local language here).
The festival is all about offering food to Goddess Yellamma, who is believed to protect people from diseases, evil spirits, and bring happiness to their homes.
During Bonalu, especially women from every family prepare something special called a “Bonam” — a pot made of clay filled with rice, jaggery, milk, and flowers. These aren’t just any pots. They are beautifully decorated, sometimes with turmeric and vermilion powder.
The whole idea is that by carrying the Bonam to the Yellamma temple, the family shows their gratitude and asks the Goddess for good health and prosperity.

🌾 How Do People Celebrate It?
The celebration is so lively that it feels like the whole city dances together!
On the streets of Hyderabad and villages, people play drums called dappu and sing folk songs that make your heart feel happy.
Women, dressed in bright sarees, carry the clay pots on their heads and walk slowly but proudly to the temple. They don’t mind the heat or the long roads — because they believe the Goddess is listening to their prayers.
At the temple, priests perform simple but meaningful rituals. People offer the Bonam, pray together, and then enjoy local sweets and snacks. In many places, small fireworks light up the sky, adding even more joy to the atmosphere.
💖 Why Is Bonalu Special to Me?
When I was little, I used to think festivals were just about fireworks and food. But Bonalu taught me something different. It’s about faith.
I remember my grandmother telling me:
“Aadya, Bonalu is our way to say thank you to the Goddess for taking care of us.”
That made me feel really warm inside. Every year, I help my mother prepare the Bonam. We clean the clay pot carefully, add rice and milk, decorate it with flowers, and walk to the temple together. I feel proud to be part of something that has been celebrated for generations.
🌏 Why Should You Care About Bonalu?
If you’re from another country and you’re reading this, I want you to know that Yellamma Bonalu is very special.
✔️ It is full of colors and happiness.
✔️ It shows the simplicity of Indian traditions.
✔️ It is not about big buildings or technology, but about people coming together in joy.
Many people from around the world visit Telangana during this time because they want to see real Indian culture — not from movies or books, but from the streets and temples where it happens every year.
It’s a chance to see how people celebrate with so much love and how they care for their traditions.
🍛 Fun Fact – The Food!
After the prayer, people don’t just go home. They enjoy local dishes like spicy rice, jaggery sweets, and local snacks.
If you ever come to Telangana during Bonalu, don’t forget to try the local street food. It’s very different from regular food you eat. It’s tastier and full of flavor, made by small family-run stalls.
🌼 Conclusion – Why I Love Yellamma Bonalu
Yellamma Bonalu is my favorite festival because it teaches me something very important —
Gratitude.
No matter how small your prayer or offering is, it is full of love.
It reminds me that traditions are not just old practices but are living memories that keep people together.
👉 I hope you enjoyed reading about this special festival from my home.
If you ever visit India, try to experience Bonalu at least once.
It’s colorful, warm, and full of smiles.
— Aadya Mutyala 😊
